A peacock curves its body and tail into the shape of a crescent, with a pearl fringe along the lower rim and three fine chains descending below, each ending in small bell clusters. Available in Red Green, Blue Baby Pink, Black, Blue, Green, Red, Yellow, White and Aqua.
In most peacock jewellery the bird sits on or inside a frame. Here the peacock is the frame — its body curls round and its tail sweeps up to close the circle, so the crescent and the creature are the same object. That is a harder thing to draw convincingly and it gives the earring a coherence that applied motifs lack, because nothing has been stuck onto anything else.
The body is modelled in relief with the crest and eye picked out, and the tail is textured with fine feather lines that catch light along their length. A stone sits at the head. The pearl fringe hangs from the inner curve where the body closes, softening the shape. Below, three chains descend freely with bell clusters graduated along them. Gold tone throughout.
Red Green and Blue Baby Pink are two-tone. Green is the natural single colour for a peacock. Red is the festive standard. Black, White and Aqua are the graphic options, and Blue and Yellow sit between.
Hair up, neck bare. These are among the more decorative Kashmiri designs, so keep everything else quiet. They suit silk and handloom, and the peacock motif makes them a natural choice for festivals and pujas rather than for modern or western dressing.
Festivals, pujas, weddings and traditional functions.
Light for the length. The crescent is open rather than solid and the chains and bells weigh almost nothing.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably. Treated sensibly, the colour holds for a long time.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and through any fringe or chain. Store them flat and on their own in a pouch so the chains do not tangle, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
