These peacock chandbali earrings build the whole arc around a single bird. A gold-tone crescent set with white kundan stones sweeps out from the ear, and at its lower end a peacock sits with a deep blue stone for its body and a fanned tail worked into the curve.
The arc is filled with rows of white kundan-style stones in raised settings, giving it a dense, jewelled surface, and a fringe of small pearl-like beads runs along the outer edge so the shape stays crisp.
The peacock is the detail worth looking at closely: its body is a smooth blue stone, its head and crest are picked out in fine relief, and its tail feathers merge into the stonework of the arc itself. Below it hangs a ridged silver jhumka with its own pearl fringe, swinging free of the arc above.
The peacock is India's national bird and one of the most enduring motifs in its jewellery, standing for beauty and grace. On a chandbali it is a natural fit: the arc gives the tail room to spread, which is why peacock chandbalis have stayed popular for generations.
Wear these with a silk saree, a lehenga or an anarkali, in colours that pick up the blue of the peacock: teal, royal blue, ivory or mustard all work. Pull your hair back so the peacock is not hidden.
Keep the necklace simple, or skip it, so the eye goes to the ear.
The arc spreads the weight across the ear rather than hanging from one point, and the jhumka below is light for its size. These are still a festive-weight earring, so they suit an evening function better than a full working day.
Keep these away from water, perfume and hair spray, and put them on once you are ready. Wipe them with a soft dry cloth after wearing, and store them flat in a box so the arc holds its shape and the jhumka hangs free.
