Two parrots face each other across the top of a crescent, a large stone sits at the centre of the curve below them, and a close fringe of small pearls runs along the lower rim. Available in Mint, Red, Baby Pink, Green, Black, Grey, Yellow, Aqua and Blue.
The parrot appears constantly in South Indian temple work and in Mughal miniature painting, usually in pairs and usually facing one another. It carries associations of love and messages — a parrot is the bird that carries word between lovers in a great deal of Indian poetry — which is why it turns up so often on bridal pieces. Here the two birds frame the stone rather than dominating, so the motif is present without the earring becoming literal.
The crescent is filled with fine granulation and small stone settings rather than left plain, so the surface has texture across its whole face. The centre stone is large and bezel-set, holding the eye at the middle of the curve. The parrots are modelled in relief with detailing on the wing and tail, perched where the crescent meets the stud above. The pearl fringe is close-set on short links so it reads as a continuous soft band. Antique gold throughout, darkened in the recesses so the granulation stands out.
Green is the obvious match for a parrot motif and the most traditional. Red is the classic festive alternative. Black and Grey read as modern against antique gold. Mint, Aqua, Baby Pink and Yellow are the soft daytime options, and Blue sits between.
Hair up, neck bare or a thin chain. These suit silk and cotton, and the antique finish means they sit comfortably alongside temple jewellery if you have any. They are wide rather than long, which makes them a good choice with a high neckline.
Daily wear with a kurta, festivals, pujas and daytime functions. Substantial enough for an occasion without being bridal.
Moderate. The crescent is open through the middle and the pearls are small, so the weight is lower than the width suggests.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably. Treated sensibly, the colour holds for a long time.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and through any fringe. Store them in a pouch rather than loose in a box, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
