A pair of jhumkas in oxidised German silver over brass and coloured stones. A teardrop stone leads the design. They measure about 2 inches.
The jhumka is the oldest earring shape still in daily use in India — a dome with a flared bell hung beneath it, drawn from the temple bell. The shape survives because it swings. A flat earring only moves when the head turns; a bell moves with every step.
The main stone is a pear, or teardrop. It is the shape that suits a hanging earring best, because the point leads the eye downward along the line the earring already takes.
A ring of tiny pearls circles the centre stone. A pearl halo is the cheapest way to make a modest stone look set rather than stuck on, and it has been used that way for centuries.
A small bell hangs at the very bottom, finishing the drop. Ending a long earring with a jhumka is a convention — the bell gives the eye somewhere to stop.
A fringe of small pearls finishes the lower edge. Pearls do something no faceted stone can — they give back a soft diffused light, which calms a design that would otherwise be all glitter.
The metal is hand-engraved rather than cast smooth. Engraving on oxidised silver-tone work is what the blackening is for: the lines hold the dark, the raised surfaces are polished back to light.
This is brass finished as German silver, then oxidised. German silver is a misleading trade name: there is no silver in it, only copper, nickel and zinc. What it does have is the right colour and the right hardness to hold engraved detail.
Monalisa stone carries the colour. It is glass rather than crystal, and that is a deliberate choice rather than a compromise: glass takes a deeper, more saturated colour than cut crystal does at any price, and depth of colour is what this style needs against a blackened ground.
They are stocked in 4 shades: Sea Green, Baby Pink, Red and Green. The swatches on this page show them; the shade you choose is confirmed on your enquiry before anything is charged.
They want the hair off the neck. Put them with a saree or a plain silk kurta, keep the neck bare or close to it, and let the earrings be the ornament.
Costume jewellery earns its place by letting you wear a shape you would never commission in gold. Nothing here pretends to be precious; the pleasure is in the design, and the design is genuinely old.
The care is simple and it does matter: no water, no perfume, no chemicals on the metal. Wipe them dry after each wearing and store them sealed rather than in open air. On oxidised work, never use a silver dip — a dip strips the blackening that the design depends on and the piece cannot be brought back.
Instead of an add-to-cart checkout you will find an enquiry button, and that is deliberate. These arrive in small quantities per colour, and the colour you want has to be confirmed before we charge for it. Send the enquiry with the shade you are after and we will reply with stock, price and timing. Keyura is prepaid only — there is no cash on delivery on any order, on any product.
