These oxidised sunburst studs with gold deer drops carry a motif you will rarely see in Indian earrings: a fully modelled deer, standing with its head raised and antlers back, hanging below a wide silver disc.
The stud is an oxidised silver disc worked in radiating lines, with a gold rosette at its centre and clusters of red and green kundan stones set around one side, so the pattern is deliberately off-centre rather than evenly spread.
From the base of the disc, a short twisted rod drops to the deer itself. It is cast in gold tone with real depth: the curve of the neck, the legs set apart, the antlers swept back over the body. Small pearl clusters hang beneath, balancing the gold figure against the silver above it.
The deer appears throughout Indian art and mythology, from temple carvings to the golden deer of the Ramayana, and it is a natural companion motif to the peacocks and elephants more commonly used in jewellery. Wearing one is a quieter choice that people notice and ask about.
The sculptural drop deserves a plain background: a solid-colour kurta, a handloom saree or a plain blouse rather than a heavy print. Wear your hair back so the deer is clearly visible, since it is the whole point of the design.
Most of the weight sits in the disc against the lobe, with the deer hanging below on a short rod, so the earring is balanced rather than front-heavy. The drop is short enough that it does not tangle in hair or catch on a dupatta.
Fully sculpted animal charms cost more to cast than flat stamped ones, and deer are made in far smaller numbers than peacocks or elephants. This is a design people buy when they see it rather than search for, so a batch tends to disappear without warning.
Keep the earrings away from water, perfume and cosmetics so the oxidised disc keeps its shadow and the gold deer stays warm in tone. Wipe them gently with a soft dry cloth rather than polishing hard, and store them in a pouch so the antlers are not bent.
