A darkened pair of drop earrings, German silver over brass with the highlights rubbed back and coloured stones. Small stones are massed into a cluster. They measure about 1.5 inches.
The design hangs free below the post, so it swings. A hanging earring reads as livelier than a stud of the same size for exactly that reason.
Small stones are massed into a cluster. Clustering is the oldest answer to the cost of one large stone, and in Indian jewellery it has a far longer history than the solitaire ever did.
The main stone is a pear, or teardrop. It is the shape that suits a hanging earring best, because the point leads the eye downward along the line the earring already takes.
An oval stone carries the centre. Oval is the quiet choice between round and pear — it fills more space than a round stone without pointing anywhere.
A fringe of small pearls finishes the lower edge. Pearls do something no faceted stone can — they give back a soft diffused light, which calms a design that would otherwise be all glitter.
The metal is brass with a German silver finish. German silver contains no silver at all — it is an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc that happens to be silver-white, and it has been used for Indian tribal and oxidised jewellery for well over a century because it takes a blackening beautifully.
The coloured stone is Monalisa — the Indian trade name for a translucent glass stone, cut and polished so it holds a soft internal glow rather than a hard sparkle. Against dark oxidised metal that softness is exactly right; a brilliant-cut crystal would look wrong here.
10 shades are available: Green, Black, Sea Green, Ruby, Sky Blue, Yellow, White, Blue, Baby Pink and Red. The swatches on this page show them; the shade you choose is confirmed on your enquiry before anything is charged.
Wear them with the hair up. These are equally at home with a cotton kurta and with silk — earrings are the one piece of Indian jewellery that never needs an occasion.
There is no sense in which this is an investment piece, and that is rather the point of it — you can buy a pair that suits one outfit, wear it to one wedding, and be perfectly satisfied.
A plated or oxidised finish is a surface, so it wears where it rubs. Perfume and sweat dull it fastest — spray first, dress second. Wipe the pair with a soft dry cloth after wearing and seal them in a pouch with the air squeezed out, because it is oxygen and damp that do the damage, not use.
This piece is listed for enquiry rather than instant checkout. Stock runs in small lots per colour and turns over quickly, so rather than take your money and refund it later we confirm the shade is in hand first. Use the enquiry button on this page and we will come back with availability, the final price and a delivery window. All Keyura orders are prepaid. Cash on delivery is not offered anywhere on this site.
