drop earrings cut in German silver and oxidised, so the pattern carries at a distance and coloured stones. A lotus opens at the top. They measure about 1.5 inches.
This is a drop: a small top at the ear and the real design hanging below it. The arrangement puts the ornament where it catches light at eye level rather than hiding it against the lobe.
A lotus sits at the top. The lotus stands for purity and for beginnings, and its concentric rings of petals are a gift to a stone-setter — every ring gives a reason to step the stones outward.
The body is a crescent, held broadside. The curve is not only decorative: it distributes the weight along an arc so that nothing pulls at one point on the lobe.
The main stone is a pear, or teardrop. It is the shape that suits a hanging earring best, because the point leads the eye downward along the line the earring already takes.
Tiny ghungroo bells edge the bottom. They are the same bells sewn onto a dancer's anklet, and they are hung here for the same reason: a piece that makes a faint sound as it moves is noticed.
Coloured glass stones are used alongside the clear ones. Glass is the right choice for colour at this price: it takes a deeper, more saturated shade than any cut crystal does.
The finish is oxidised German silver over brass. Oxidising is a deliberate chemical darkening, not tarnish and not dirt — the dark sits in the recesses and the raised surfaces are polished back, which is what gives this kind of work its depth.
The stones are Monalisa, a translucent glass stone sold under that name across India. It is not a gemstone and Keyura does not describe it as one. What it is is the only material that gives this depth of colour for the money.
9 shades are available: Baby Pink, White, Black, Yellow, Red, Sea Green, Blue, Ruby and Green. The swatches on this page show them; the shade you choose is confirmed on your enquiry before anything is charged.
They go as happily over a plain black kurta as over bandhani, which is the useful thing about oxidised work: it does not insist on being ethnic.
A note on what this is not: it is not hallmarked, it is not precious metal, and it has no resale value. Keyura sells it as what it is — a well-made plated piece with good stones, priced accordingly and described without the word gold doing any work it has not earned.
Treat the finish as the wearing part. Keep it away from water, perfume and hair spray, put the earrings on after you have finished dressing, and wipe them with a dry cotton cloth before they go away. Stored dry in a zip pouch with the air pressed out, the finish lasts for years; left in a humid bathroom it will not last a season.
Instead of an add-to-cart checkout you will find an enquiry button, and that is deliberate. These arrive in small quantities per colour, and the colour you want has to be confirmed before we charge for it. Send the enquiry with the shade you are after and we will reply with stock, price and timing. Payment is prepaid in every case. We do not offer cash on delivery.
