Oxidised Hook Earrings with Round Cabochon and Petal Frame

What you are looking at

These hang on an open ear wire rather than a post — a hook that passes through the piercing and curves back behind the lobe. A hook goes on in a second and lets the earring swing freely.

The stone is a cabochon, domed and polished rather than cut into facets. A cabochon gives one soft moving highlight instead of sparkle, which is the right finish against matte oxidised metal.

Petal-shaped lobes radiate from the setting, turning a round stone into a flower without adding a single extra stone.

The frame is scalloped around its edge, a repeating petal shape that softens what would otherwise be a plain disc.

Metal and stones

This is brass finished as German silver, then oxidised. German silver is a misleading trade name: there is no silver in it, only copper, nickel and zinc. What it does have is the right colour and the right hardness to hold engraved detail.

The stones are Monalisa, a translucent glass stone sold under that name across India. It is not a gemstone and Keyura does not describe it as one. What it is is the only material that gives this depth of colour for the money.
