A pair of drop earrings in oxidised German silver over brass and coloured stones. A teardrop stone leads the design. They measure about 2 inches.
This is a drop: a small top at the ear and the real design hanging below it. The arrangement puts the ornament where it catches light at eye level rather than hiding it against the lobe.
The main stone is a pear, or teardrop. It is the shape that suits a hanging earring best, because the point leads the eye downward along the line the earring already takes.
The frame is openwork filigree, metal drawn into fine curls and soldered into a lattice. Filigree is slow handwork and it is the first detail a cheaper copy loses.
Two stones are used, one above the other, so the earring has a rhythm instead of a single focus.
The stones are faceted rather than polished smooth, so they return points of light rather than a single sheen.
This is brass finished as German silver, then oxidised. German silver is a misleading trade name: there is no silver in it, only copper, nickel and zinc. What it does have is the right colour and the right hardness to hold engraved detail.
The coloured stone is Monalisa — the Indian trade name for a translucent glass stone, cut and polished so it holds a soft internal glow rather than a hard sparkle. Against dark oxidised metal that softness is exactly right; a brilliant-cut crystal would look wrong here.
