An oval cabochon sits flat against the lobe, and directly beneath it three short straight gold bars hang side by side, swinging freely as a small fringe. Available in Green, Baby Pink, Red, Black, Aqua, Mint, Grey, Blue and Yellow.
Fringes on Indian earrings are almost always pearls, beads or bells — small round objects that cluster. Using three straight bars instead gives a completely different result: the fringe becomes a set of parallel lines rather than a soft mass, which reads as modern and architectural. They also move differently, swinging as rigid elements rather than drifting the way strung beads do.
The stone is a smooth oval cabochon in a plain bezel, set with its long axis vertical so it leads the eye downward into the fringe. The three bars are flat, identical in width and very slightly different in length, hung on small links directly from the lower edge of the bezel so they sit close together with narrow gaps between them. Nothing else is added.
Monalisa is the trade name used across Indian fashion jewellery for a smooth, slightly translucent stone with a soft inner glow, somewhere between a cat's eye and an opal in appearance. It is cut as a cabochon rather than faceted, so it shows an even field of gentle colour instead of scattering sparkle. That makes it considerably easier to wear in daylight than a faceted stone, and kinder against most skin tones. It is a decorative stone used in costume and fashion jewellery and is not a certified natural gemstone.
The stone is the only colour and it sits above plain gold, so it reads clearly whichever shade you choose. Black and Grey are the most modern. Red and Green are the deepest. Baby Pink, Aqua, Mint, Blue and Yellow are the softer options.
These are small and clean, which makes them unusually versatile — a shirt, a plain dress, a cotton kurta or a silk saree all take them. The fringe gives just enough movement to be noticed without the earring becoming a statement piece. Hair up or down.
Parties, office, evenings and daily wear.
Light. A thin cabochon and three flat bars weigh very little, and the fringe is short enough not to tangle in hair or catch on a collar.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings. Store them in a pouch rather than loose in a box, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
