A thick open hoop curves round and stops short of closing, with a Monalisa stone set at each end — a large one at the lower terminal and a small one opposite. Available in Blue, Yellow, Baby Pink, Red, Mint, Aqua, Grey, Green and Black.
An open hoop has two ends, and what you put on them decides the whole character of the piece. Leaving them bare reads as unfinished; capping both with stones of different sizes turns the gap into a deliberate feature and gives the circle a beginning and an end. The size difference matters — two matching stones would make the hoop look symmetrical and static, while unequal ones give it direction.
The hoop is a flat band rather than round wire, which gives it more presence and a broader surface to catch light. Both stones are smooth cabochons in plain bezels fixed flush to the terminals, so the line runs continuously from metal into stone without a visible join. The larger stone sits at the bottom of the curve where the eye naturally finishes, and the smaller one caps the upper end near the lobe.
Monalisa is the trade name used across Indian fashion jewellery for a smooth, slightly translucent stone with a soft inner glow, somewhere between a cat's eye and an opal in appearance. It is cut as a cabochon rather than faceted, so it shows an even field of gentle colour instead of scattering sparkle. That makes it considerably easier to wear in daylight than a faceted stone, and kinder against most skin tones. It is a decorative stone used in costume and fashion jewellery and is not a certified natural gemstone.
Both stones share the chosen shade. Black and Grey are the most contemporary. Red and Green are the deepest. Blue, Yellow, Baby Pink, Mint and Aqua are the softer options, and pale stones show the Monalisa glow best against the broad gold band.
These work with almost everything and need no thought. The flat band gives them enough substance for an evening while the simplicity keeps them wearable at work. Hair up or down, any necklace, Indian or western clothing.
Parties, office, daily wear and casual outings.
Light. The hoop is a thin flat band rather than solid, and the two cabochons are small. Nothing swings or catches.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings. Store them in a pouch rather than loose in a box, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
