A lotus-crowned jhumka with a pearl fringe sits at the lobe without a piercing, held by a clip, and several strands of pearl-and-gold chain sweep from the top of the earring up over the ear and into the hair, where a decorative hook secures them.
The chains are not decoration alone. Called sahara — the word means support — they exist because a heavy traditional jhumka pulls uncomfortably on the lobe, and running chains from the earring up into the hair transfers most of that weight to the scalp. On a non-piercing version they do more: they are the main anchor, so the clip only has to keep the earring in position rather than hold the whole load. That is what makes a piece this size wearable with no piercing at all.
Multiple strands of fine chain and tiny pearls drape in graduated lengths, so they fall as a layered curve over the ear rather than a single line, and a worked gold cuff follows the upper ear. The jhumka itself has a lotus crown and a pearl fringe. Fit the hair hook first, settle the chains, then position the earring at the lobe — doing it in that order means the chains take the weight from the start.
Hair must be up — a bun or a braid for the hook to grip. This is bridal and heavy-occasion jewellery, and it is designed to be the only thing you are wearing above the neck apart from a maang tikka. No necklace, or the barest one.
Weddings, receptions, sangeets and bridal wear.
Comfortable for the size precisely because of the chains — most of the weight sits on the scalp rather than the lobe, and there is no piercing to strain.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush between the pearl drops and inside the bell, where a cloth cannot reach. Hang or lay them flat in a pouch so the fringe is not crushed, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
