A teardrop of pierced gold filigree sits at the lobe, and below it hangs a round Monalisa stone in a plain bezel, with a small gold leaf sprig applied across its face. Available in Red, Mint, Black, Baby Pink, Green, Yellow, Grey, Aqua and Blue.
Monalisa is the trade name used across Indian fashion jewellery for a smooth, slightly translucent stone with a soft inner glow — somewhere between a cat's eye and an opal in appearance. It is popular because it reads as a solid block of gentle colour rather than as sparkle, which makes it far easier to wear in daylight than a faceted stone and far kinder against most skin tones.
The filigree teardrop above is pierced right through in a scrolling pattern, so it stays light and lets skin show behind it. The stone below is a large smooth cabochon held in a plain bezel with a narrow rim, so almost the full dome is visible. Across its surface a small gold leaf sprig is applied, breaking the expanse of colour and tying the stone back to the goldwork above. The two sections are linked so the stone swings slightly.
Because the stone is large and smooth, the colour is the dominant feature. Red and Green are the traditional festive choices. Black and Grey read as modern. Mint, Baby Pink, Aqua, Yellow and Blue are the soft options, and the pale shades show the Monalisa glow most clearly.
These suit silk, cotton and handloom, and the soft stone colour means they work in daylight where a bright faceted stone can look harsh. Hair up or tucked back. Keep the necklace simple so the stone stays the focus.
Festivals, pujas, daytime functions and weddings as a guest.
Light and well balanced. The filigree top weighs almost nothing and the stone, while large, is a thin cabochon rather than a solid lump.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably. Treated sensibly, the colour holds for a long time.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and into textured areas. Store them in a pouch rather than loose in a box, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
