A round stone at the lobe, below it a broad panel carrying flat mirror-like discs within a decorated border, then a jhumka with a pearl fringe, and from it long chains descending with bell clusters. Available in Black, Baby Pink, Red, White, Aqua, Yellow Green, Green, Mint and Blue.
Mirror work — small reflective discs held in place by a stitched or metal border — belongs to Gujarati and Rajasthani textile craft far more than to jewellery. Translating it into an earring panel is an unusual move, and it works because a flat mirror reflects differently from a faceted stone: it throws back a single bright flash rather than scattering light, which gives the panel a distinct, almost liquid quality against the matte gold.
The panel is set with several flat reflective discs in a row, each held in a raised gold rim, with pierced detailing filling the spaces between them. A coloured stone sits above at the lobe. The jhumka below is small relative to the overall length, fluted and finished with a close pearl fringe. The chains hang free and carry graduated bell clusters. Gold tone throughout.
Red and Green are the traditional Rajasthani pairings and suit the mirror work best. Yellow Green is a two-tone option. Black and White are the graphic choices. Aqua, Mint, Baby Pink and Blue are the soft options. The mirrors and gold stay the same throughout.
Hair up and secured, neck bare. These are a natural match for bandhani, leheriya, mirror-work blouses and anything with a Gujarati or Rajasthani character, and they also work well against plain silk where the mirrors catch light cleanly.
Weddings, Navratri, garba, festivals and regional functions.
Light for the length. The panel is thin, the jhumka is hollow and the chains weigh almost nothing.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably. Treated sensibly, the colour holds for a long time.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and through any fringe or chain. Store them flat and on their own in a pouch so the chains do not tangle, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
