A peacock stands at the top of this earring, its body and crest picked out in enamel, and below it hangs a crescent filled with the same colour and rimmed with small round pearls. Available in Baby Pink Mint, Black White, Red Green, Yellow Green and Blue Aqua.
What separates this from an ordinary enamelled chandbali is that every colourway is a pair. One shade fills the broad areas and a second picks out the detailing, so the design has internal contrast before it ever meets an outfit. That matters on a motif as busy as a peacock: with a single flat colour the bird disappears into its own silhouette, whereas two tones keep the crest, body and tail legible from a distance.
The peacock sits above the crescent rather than inside it, which gives the earring height and keeps the lobe end narrow and tidy. Its tail sweeps back along the top edge of the crescent so the two halves read as one continuous shape instead of a charm hung from a stud. The crescent is enamelled across its face and set with small stones around the inner curve, and a row of round pearls hangs from the lower rim on individual links so they swing freely. The whole piece is finished in a warm gold tone.
The crescent earring came into India with Mughal court jewellery and has never gone out of use, because a curve that mirrors the line of the jaw flatters nearly every face. Four centuries of changing fashion have left the shape essentially untouched, which is a reasonable argument for buying one.
Pick the colourway to echo a detail in your outfit — a border, a print, a dupatta — rather than matching the whole garment. Keep the neck bare or wear a thin chain only, and tie hair back so the full crescent and the pearl fringe stay visible. These suit cotton and silk equally.
Festivals, pujas, sangeets and family functions. Substantial enough to carry a festive look on their own, light enough not to become a burden by the end of the evening.
The crescent is open through the middle and the pearls are strung rather than set, so the weight stays moderate. The peacock top keeps the balance close to the lobe rather than dragging it forward.
Meenakari enamel is harder than it looks but chips on impact, so store the pair in a pouch rather than loose in a box with metal jewellery. Put them on after perfume, hairspray and foundation, wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing, and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings. Never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner — all three attack enamel and loosen kundan settings.
