A round Monalisa stone sits at the lobe inside a plain gold ring, a short branch with two textured leaves angles down from it, and at the bottom a larger round stone sits inside a second, wider ring. Available in Blue, Mint, Grey, Yellow, Black and Aqua.
Repeating the stone-inside-a-ring motif at two different sizes is what makes this work. The eye recognises the shape at the top, then meets it again larger at the bottom, and the branch between them reads as the connection. A single stone would be ordinary; two of the same kind at different scales creates a relationship, and the earring becomes a small composition rather than a pendant on a stick.
Both stones are smooth round cabochons, bezel-set and then surrounded by a separate open gold ring that stands clear of the stone, so there is a visible gap of skin between stone and ring. The branch is a plain angled stem carrying two flat leaves textured with fine veining. The lower ring is noticeably larger than the upper, which is what gives the earring its bottom-heavy, settled proportion.
Monalisa is the trade name used across Indian fashion jewellery for a smooth, slightly translucent stone with a soft inner glow, somewhere between a cat's eye and an opal in appearance. It is cut as a cabochon rather than faceted, so it shows an even field of gentle colour instead of scattering sparkle. That makes it considerably easier to wear in daylight than a faceted stone, and kinder against most skin tones. It is a decorative stone used in costume and fashion jewellery and is not a certified natural gemstone.
Black is the most graphic against the gold rings. Blue and Grey are the coolest. Aqua and Mint are the softest. Yellow sits closest to the metal and reads as the warmest of the six.
Plain clothing and hair up. These are mid-length and quite wide at the bottom, so they want a clear neckline. They suit modern dressing particularly well, and work with a plain silk saree where the botanical element fits comfortably.
Parties, evenings, festivals and daytime functions.
Light for the size. The rings are fine wire, the stones are thin cabochons and the branch is flat sheet, so very little of what you see is actual weight.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably. Treated sensibly, the colour holds for a long time.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and into textured areas. Store them in a pouch rather than loose in a box, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
