A large circle of flat gold band hangs from the lobe, a short bar crosses it near the top, and two Monalisa stones of different sizes sit on the lower part of the rim. Available in Green, Yellow, Mint, Aqua, Grey and Blue.
This is one of the largest earrings in the collection and also one of the lightest, because the circle is empty. All the visual size comes from the diameter of the hoop; all the detail is concentrated in the two small stones at the bottom and the short crossing bar at the top. That distribution — big outline, small incidents — is what keeps a large earring from looking heavy.
The circle is a flat band, wide enough to read as a solid line from a distance but thin in section so it carries no weight. The crossing bar sits near the top and overshoots the rim slightly on one side, breaking the perfect circle and stopping it reading as a plain ring. The two stones are bezel-set directly onto the lower rim, close together, with the larger one outermost.
Monalisa is the trade name used across Indian fashion jewellery for a smooth, slightly translucent stone with a soft inner glow, somewhere between a cat's eye and an opal in appearance. It is cut as a cabochon rather than faceted, so it shows an even field of gentle colour instead of scattering sparkle. That makes it considerably easier to wear in daylight than a faceted stone, and kinder against most skin tones. It is a decorative stone used in costume and fashion jewellery and is not a certified natural gemstone.
The two small stones are the only colour against a lot of gold, so they function as accents rather than dominating. Grey is the most modern. Green is the deepest. Yellow, Mint, Aqua and Blue are the softer options.
Hair up or tucked back, neck bare or a fine chain. These are large and graphic and want plain clothing — a solid dress, a plain kurta, simple western dressing. Against a busy print the open circle disappears. Skip a statement necklace.
Parties, evenings, daytime functions and casual wear.
Remarkably light for the size, because the circle is empty and the band is thin. It hangs as a flat plane close to the neck rather than projecting outward.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings. Store them in a pouch rather than loose in a box, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
