A narrow textured bar sits against the lobe, and from it hangs a large flat disc pierced right through with a dense lattice of fine openwork. There are no stones anywhere on the piece.
This disc covers a lot of ear, and a solid version of the same size would be both heavy and dull. Piercing it into a lattice removes most of the metal and most of the weight, and it changes how the earring reads — light passes through, so the disc looks like a woven screen rather than a slab. That is the oldest trick in metalwork and it still works better than anything else for making a big piece wearable.
The lattice is a repeating radial pattern that grows denser towards the centre, which gives the disc a focal point without adding any solid element. Its rim is a plain polished band, framing the openwork and stopping the pattern from fraying at the edge. The bar above is textured with fine granulation, deliberately matte so it does not compete with the disc below. The disc hangs freely from the bar, so it swings as a single flat plane.
Nothing is set into this pair, which means nothing can fall out and the earring goes with any outfit colour. For a statement piece that is a genuine convenience.
Hair up, neck bare. These are large and graphic, so they want a plain outfit — solid silk, a clean-cut kurta, or western clothing in a single colour. Against heavy embroidery the lattice disappears. Skip the necklace.
Weddings, receptions, festivals and evenings.
Much lighter than the size suggests, because the disc is mostly holes. It is a flat plane, so it hangs close to the neck rather than projecting outward.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably. Treated sensibly, the colour holds for a long time.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and through any fringe. Store them in a pouch rather than loose in a box, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
