A peacock in profile, its body and fanned tail packed with kundan stones, with a heavy cascade of beads falling from the lower edge. These are large earrings and they are meant to be — this is the piece you wear when the outfit is plain and the jewellery is the event. Available in Peach, Grey and Blue.
Big earrings fail in two ways: they are too heavy to keep on, or they are solid metal and look like a slab. This design avoids both. The peacock's body is built as an open framework filled with stones rather than a cast plate, and the bead cascade — which supplies most of the visual size — weighs almost nothing because the beads are small and strung rather than set. The result covers a lot of ear without the usual penalty.
The peacock's crest, eye and body are picked out in individual kundan settings, with the tail fanning backward in a curve that follows the jawline rather than sticking outward. Its beak and crest are detailed in gold. The beads hang in graduated rows, shortest at the outer edge and longest at the centre, which is what gives the cascade its shape rather than letting it hang as a straight curtain. The finish is an antique gold throughout, so the colour reads deep rather than bright.
Wear nothing else. No necklace, no maang tikka, hair tied back completely. Against a plain silk — ivory, deep green, maroon, black — these earrings are the whole look. Against a heavily worked lehenga they will compete and both will lose. This is the single most important styling decision with a piece this size.
Sangeets, mehendi, receptions and festival evenings. They also work extremely well for photography, because the bead cascade moves and catches light in a way flat earrings do not.
Honestly assessed: these are large and you will know you are wearing them. The open construction keeps the weight far lower than the size suggests, and the cascade is light, but for a full day rather than an evening you may prefer something smaller.
Store these flat and alone — a bead cascade tangles with anything it shares a box with. Put them on last, after hair is finished. Use a dry soft brush around the kundan settings, and lift the bead rows gently rather than pulling them straight.
Type: Large statement drop earrings. Metal: Brass. Finish: Antique gold plating. Work: Kundan-style stone setting, peacock motif, graduated bead cascade. Closure: Post and butterfly back.
- Available colours: Peach, Grey, Blue
The fitting is a standard post and butterfly back for pierced ears, nothing specialist. The back is the part people lose, so it is worth checking it is seated firmly before you leave the house; a silicone stopper behind the metal back, which costs almost nothing, will stop a heavy earring drooping forward on a soft lobe.
Nothing here is hallmarked and none of it carries resale value, and both facts are stated plainly rather than buried. What you are buying is the design and the finish at a price that lets you match a piece to one outfit without weighing up the cost.
