A pair of chandbalis in gold-tone brass, set kundan-style with flat-bedded stones and coloured stones. The outline is a paisley. They measure about 3 inches.
A chandbali is built around a crescent, and the crescent is held broadside to the face. That is what separates it from a jhumka, which hangs point-down and swings; a chandbali stays where you put it.
The outline is a paisley — the mango, or kalka, a Kashmiri shawl motif that moved onto jewellery in the nineteenth century. Its curved tip gives a line of stones somewhere to end.
Three small bells hang in a row along the lower edge. Three is the usual number — two reads as unfinished, four crowds the arc.
A fringe of small pearls finishes the lower edge. Pearls do something no faceted stone can — they give back a soft diffused light, which calms a design that would otherwise be all glitter.
Turquoise-blue stones punctuate the design. That particular blue against warm gold tone is a Jaipur signature, and it is why the colour keeps returning in Indian bridal work.
Underneath the finish it is brass, given a warm gold polish rather than a thin bright electroplate. A polish of this kind sits better against kundan work, because the slightly deeper colour is closer to what the setting technique was invented for.
Those wide flat rims around the stones are the kundan idiom. Kundan setting beds a flat stone in soft metal worked cold around its edge, and the shape it leaves behind is the most recognisable thing in Indian jewellery. Nothing here is gold foil, but the proportions are the ones that technique produced.
They are stocked in 10 shades: Baby Pink, Purple, Lavender, Red, Yellow, Sky Blue, White, Green, Black and Multi Color. The swatches on this page show them; the shade you choose is confirmed on your enquiry before anything is charged.
Because they hang flat rather than forward, these go under a heavy necklace better than most large earrings. Still, one statement piece is usually enough — if the necklace is busy, keep the neck bare.
There is no sense in which this is an investment piece, and that is rather the point of it — you can buy a pair that suits one outfit, wear it to one wedding, and be perfectly satisfied.
A plated or oxidised finish is a surface, so it wears where it rubs. Perfume and sweat dull it fastest — spray first, dress second. Wipe the pair with a soft dry cloth after wearing and seal them in a pouch with the air squeezed out, because it is oxygen and damp that do the damage, not use.
Instead of an add-to-cart checkout you will find an enquiry button, and that is deliberate. These arrive in small quantities per colour, and the colour you want has to be confirmed before we charge for it. Send the enquiry with the shade you are after and we will reply with stock, price and timing. Payment is prepaid in every case. We do not offer cash on delivery.
