Kashmiri jhumkas in gold-polished brass, cut long in the Srinagar manner and coloured stones. A round medallion anchors the top. They measure about 5 inches.
A jhumka is a bell, and the bell is the point of it. The dome is struck or cast hollow so the piece stays light, and the flare at the bottom is what lets it swing clear of the jaw instead of sitting flat against it.
A round medallion anchors the top, set with flat-bedded stones in the paachi manner.
The outline is a paisley — the mango, or kalka, a Kashmiri shawl motif that moved onto jewellery in the nineteenth century. Its curved tip gives a line of stones somewhere to end.
The main stone is a pear, or teardrop. It is the shape that suits a hanging earring best, because the point leads the eye downward along the line the earring already takes.
A small bell hangs at the very bottom, finishing the drop. Ending a long earring with a jhumka is a convention — the bell gives the eye somewhere to stop.
A fringe of small pearls finishes the lower edge. Pearls do something no faceted stone can — they give back a soft diffused light, which calms a design that would otherwise be all glitter.
The body is brass, finished in a gold polish. Kashmiri-style earrings are built long and wide, so a light base metal matters more here than on a small piece — in solid metal this design would be unwearable.
Flat-bedded paachi settings and translucent Monalisa stones do the work. Neither is trying to be a diamond: paachi gives texture and Monalisa gives a soft, slightly milky colour, and the two together are what make this style read as handmade.
There are 5 colourways: Black, Ruby, Blue, Baby Pink and Yellow. The swatches on this page show them; the shade you choose is confirmed on your enquiry before anything is charged.
They want the hair off the neck. Put them with a saree or a plain silk kurta, keep the neck bare or close to it, and let the earrings be the ornament.
Costume jewellery earns its place by letting you wear a shape you would never commission in gold. Nothing here pretends to be precious; the pleasure is in the design, and the design is genuinely old.
A plated or oxidised finish is a surface, so it wears where it rubs. Perfume and sweat dull it fastest — spray first, dress second. Wipe the pair with a soft dry cloth after wearing and seal them in a pouch with the air squeezed out, because it is oxygen and damp that do the damage, not use.
This piece is listed for enquiry rather than instant checkout. Stock runs in small lots per colour and turns over quickly, so rather than take your money and refund it later we confirm the shade is in hand first. Use the enquiry button on this page and we will come back with availability, the final price and a delivery window. Keyura is prepaid only — there is no cash on delivery on any order, on any product.
