A tall pair of jhumkas worked in the Kashmiri idiom, on gold-tone brass and coloured stones. Enamel is fired into the recesses. They measure about 3.3 inches.
What makes this a jhumka rather than a drop is the hollow bell: the whole lower half is a dome of thin metal with an open mouth. That construction is why an earring this wide still weighs almost nothing on the lobe.
Enamel is fired into the recesses — meenakari, powdered glass fused to the metal in a kiln. Enamel is the only colour on jewellery that does not fade, because it is glass rather than paint.
A small bird is worked into the enamelled panel, facing sideways in the way Mughal miniature painting draws a bird.
The outline is a paisley — the mango, or kalka, a Kashmiri shawl motif that moved onto jewellery in the nineteenth century. Its curved tip gives a line of stones somewhere to end.
A small bell hangs at the very bottom, finishing the drop. Ending a long earring with a jhumka is a convention — the bell gives the eye somewhere to stop.
A fringe of small pearls finishes the lower edge. Pearls do something no faceted stone can — they give back a soft diffused light, which calms a design that would otherwise be all glitter.
It is brass under a gold polish, hollow where the design allows. Length is what this style is for, and hollow construction is what makes the length possible without the earring dragging on the lobe.
Flat-bedded paachi settings and translucent Monalisa stones do the work. Neither is trying to be a diamond: paachi gives texture and Monalisa gives a soft, slightly milky colour, and the two together are what make this style read as handmade.
7 shades are available: Sky Blue, White, Black, Green, Red, Baby Pink and Yellow. The swatches on this page show them; the shade you choose is confirmed on your enquiry before anything is charged.
These belong with a saree or a lehenga rather than a high-collared kurta, and they want the ears clear. A bell that cannot swing is only a shape.
Costume jewellery earns its place by letting you wear a shape you would never commission in gold. Nothing here pretends to be precious; the pleasure is in the design, and the design is genuinely old.
Treat the finish as the wearing part. Keep it away from water, perfume and hair spray, put the earrings on after you have finished dressing, and wipe them with a dry cotton cloth before they go away. Stored dry in a zip pouch with the air pressed out, the finish lasts for years; left in a humid bathroom it will not last a season.
This piece is listed for enquiry rather than instant checkout. Stock runs in small lots per colour and turns over quickly, so rather than take your money and refund it later we confirm the shade is in hand first. Use the enquiry button on this page and we will come back with availability, the final price and a delivery window. All Keyura orders are prepaid. Cash on delivery is not offered anywhere on this site.
