A stone-set stud, a jhumka hanging below it, and — the point of the design — several strands of pearl chain that swag upward and across to a decorative hook that clips into the hair above the ear. Available in Green, Red, Mint, Black, Baby Pink, Yellow and Grey.
This is the oldest solution to the oldest problem in Indian jewellery: heavy earrings hurt. By running chains from the earring up to a hook anchored in the hair, most of the load is carried by the head rather than the piercing. It is why brides can wear enormous jhumkas through a twelve-hour wedding, and it is a genuinely clever piece of engineering dressed up as decoration.
The hair hook is a flat filigree rosette with a curved pin behind it, designed to sit above and slightly behind the ear where it grips a section of hair. From it, several strands of fine chain strung with small pearls swag downward in graduated lengths, so they form a curved drape rather than a straight line. The jhumka at the ear is deeply fluted with a close pearl fringe, and a stone-set stud sits above it at the lobe.
Green and Red are the traditional bridal choices. Black and Grey read as modern. Mint, Baby Pink and Yellow are the soft options. The pearls and gold chains stay the same across all of them.
Hair must be up and secured — a bun or a tight braid — because the hook needs something to grip and the drape needs a clear path across the side of the head. Position the hook first, then settle the jhumka in the lobe, then adjust the swag so the chains sit evenly. Neck bare, no necklace.
Weddings, bridal wear, receptions and major festivals. This is the most formal design in the collection.
Far more comfortable than it looks, which is the entire purpose of the hair hook. The lobe carries only part of the weight. Allow a few minutes the first time to get the hook positioned correctly — it is worth the trouble.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably. Treated sensibly, the colour holds for a long time.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and through any fringe or chain. Store them in a pouch rather than loose in a box, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
