The same idea as a round enamel stud, cut into six sides. A hexagonal face filled with colour, a raised gold flower at the centre, and a border of small clear stones following the angles rather than a circle. Available in Yellow and Black.
A circle is the default in stud earrings, which is exactly the problem with it — it is the shape you get when no decision has been made. Six straight edges read as considered: the facets catch light at different angles as the head turns, so the earring flickers slightly rather than reflecting evenly, and the geometry sits better with modern clothing than a round disc does. It is a small change that alters the character of the piece completely.
The enamel fills the hexagonal face, set into a recess so the surface stays flush and smooth. At the centre, a raised gold flower with a stone at its heart provides a focal point and keeps the flat colour from looking like a tile. The stone border follows each of the six edges and turns the corners cleanly, which is harder to execute than a continuous circle and is the detail worth paying attention to here. The post sits centred behind the face.
Yellow reads warm and traditional against gold, and suits mustard, cream, ivory and most prints. Black is the more modern choice and the more useful one if you wear a lot of plain or western clothing, because it goes with absolutely everything and never competes.
These suit office and daily wear, and the geometric shape means they sit comfortably with shirts, dresses and co-ord sets as well as with kurtas. Wear them alone or as part of a stacked piercing. Keep necklaces simple — a stud this small does not need balancing.
Everyday, office, college and travel. Small, flat and robust enough not to need careful handling.
Flat and light with nothing hanging. The corners are softened rather than sharp, so there is nothing to catch on hair or a scarf.
Meenakari enamel is harder than it looks but chips on impact, so store the pair in a pouch rather than loose in a box with metal jewellery. Put them on after perfume, hairspray and foundation, wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing, and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings. Never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner — all three attack enamel and loosen kundan settings.
