This is the traditional jhumka in its most recognisable form, made at a proper size rather than scaled down for daily wear. A large round disc, worked all over with radiating filigree, sits flat against the lobe. Suspended from it is a deep bell-shaped dome, fluted from crown to rim, and around that rim runs a full fringe of pearl beads. The finish is a warm two tone that reads closer to antique gold than to silver, which gives the pair a softer, older look than a bright plated earring would have. It is handcrafted, and the small irregularities in the filigree are part of that.
The top disc is the part that distinguishes this design. Rather than a plain stud, it is a broad circle with a raised central boss and fine lines radiating outward to a beaded border, so it functions as a decorative element in its own right before the dome even begins. The dome below is unusually deep, which is what gives the jhumka its classic bell profile, and the vertical fluting runs the full height so light moves down the curve as you turn your head. The pearl fringe is set close and even around the entire lower edge.
A jhumka at this scale wants space around it. Wear your hair up or swept back, and keep the neckline simple so the width of the disc and the depth of the dome both register. It is a natural match for a silk or Banarasi saree and for heavier festive wear, and it also works well with a plain anarkali where it becomes the only ornament you need. Because the tone is warm rather than cool, it sits better alongside gold bangles than silver ones. Avoid wearing a long necklace with it.
Weddings, festivals, receptions, Diwali and Karwa Chauth. It is also the kind of piece often bought as a gift for a mother or mother-in-law, because the design is classic rather than fashion-led.
Handle the pearl fringe gently, since a full fringe at this scale has many individually strung beads. Store the pair flat and separately so the beads do not catch on other jewellery. Keep the earrings dry, put them on after perfume and hair products, and take them off before bathing or sleeping. Wipe with a soft dry cloth only, never an abrasive one, because rubbing will blur the two tone contrast. Do not use liquid jewellery cleaner, which will collect inside the dome where it cannot be removed.
