A small teardrop stone sits at the lobe, and below it a half-moon of the same stone is framed on its curved edge with a row of uncut-style kundan, finished underneath with a short pearl fringe. Available in Blue, Yellow, Mint, Amethyst and Grey.
Kundan borders normally surround other kundan, or a carved stone. Putting one around a large smooth Monalisa cabochon is an unusual pairing: the kundan supplies the traditional vocabulary and the cabochon supplies a clean modern surface, and because the two kinds of stone reflect light so differently the border never merges into the centre. It is a neat way to make a contemporary stone look at home at a festival.
The half-moon is a single large cabochon with its flat edge uppermost, so the curve faces down into the fringe. The kundan sits only along the curved edge rather than all the way round, which keeps the flat top clean and stops the piece looking like a medallion. Small pearls hang from the lower rim on individual links. The teardrop above is a smaller cabochon in a plain bezel.
Amethyst is a deep purple and the most unusual of the five. Blue and Grey are the coolest. Mint is the softest. Yellow sits closest to the gold and reads warmest against the kundan.
Hair up or tucked back, neck bare or a thin chain. These are mid-length and work for festivals, pujas and daytime functions, and the modern stone means they do not look out of place with plainer clothing either.
Festivals, pujas, daytime functions and evenings.
Light. The cabochon is thin, the kundan border is a single row and the pearls are small, so the earring stays comfortable through a long event.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and through any fringe. Store them in a pouch rather than loose in a box, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
