A paisley-shaped stud sits at the lobe and a large pierced bell hangs beneath, its openwork panels picked out with small touches of green enamel, finished with two staggered rows of pearls rather than one.
The double fringe is the detail that makes this piece read as bridal rather than everyday. A single row of pearls outlines the rim and stops; two staggered rows fill the space below it, so the bottom of the earring becomes a band of pearl rather than a line, and the whole silhouette gains perhaps a third again in visual length. It also changes how the earring moves — the two rows swing slightly out of step with each other, which is why a double-fringed jhumka catches the eye across a room.
The green here is used sparingly, dropped into the pierced panels rather than covering the bell. On a piece with this much openwork a fully enamelled surface would close everything up and lose the lightness; small touches of colour instead draw the eye to the piercing and let the gold structure stay visible. It is the opposite approach to a solid meena jhumka, and the right one for a bell built as a frame.
Hair fully up and the neck clear. These are large and should carry the look on their own. They go with green, gold-bordered silk, ivory and maroon, and suit a wedding or a reception better than a daytime function.
Weddings, receptions, sangeets and festivals.
Moderate to substantial. The openwork bell is light for its size, but the double fringe adds real weight at the bottom.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush between the pearl drops and inside the bell, where a cloth cannot reach. Hang or lay them flat in a pouch so the fringe is not crushed, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
