Two long vertical bars are joined by short horizontal rungs, forming an abstract ladder covered in fine granulation, and a round Monalisa stone hangs at the base. The two earrings in the pair are different lengths. Available in Baby Pink, Yellow, Mint, Black, Red, Blue, Green, Aqua, Amethyst and Grey.
The two earrings are not the same length — one ladder is noticeably longer than the other. Mismatched pairs are a contemporary idea that takes some confidence to wear, and they work because the eye reads them as a single deliberate composition across the face rather than as two identical objects. If you have never tried asymmetric earrings, this is a straightforward way in, because the difference is in length rather than in design.
Every bar is covered in fine granulation — tiny raised beads of metal — which gives the whole structure a matte, slightly crusted texture quite unlike polished wire. The rungs are placed irregularly rather than at even intervals, reinforcing the hand-made feeling. At the base of each ladder a round cabochon hangs in a plain bezel, smooth and polished, providing the only clean surface on the piece.
Monalisa is the trade name used across Indian fashion jewellery for a smooth, slightly translucent stone with a soft inner glow, somewhere between a cat's eye and an opal in appearance. It is cut as a cabochon rather than faceted, so it shows an even field of gentle colour instead of scattering sparkle. That makes it considerably easier to wear in daylight than a faceted stone, and kinder against most skin tones. It is a decorative stone used in costume and fashion jewellery and is not a certified natural gemstone.
This design includes Amethyst, a deep purple not offered elsewhere in the range and worth considering if you want something less common. Black and Grey are the most graphic. Red and Green are the deepest. Baby Pink, Yellow, Mint, Blue and Aqua are the softer options.
Plain, modern clothing and hair up. These are architectural and asymmetric, so they need a clean background and nothing else competing. Skip the necklace entirely. They photograph very well because the two sides differ.
Parties, evenings, gallery openings and occasions where the jewellery is meant to be noticed.
Light. Thin bars and one small stone per side, with the weight spread along the length rather than concentrated at the bottom.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings. Store them in a pouch rather than loose in a box, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
