A peacock worked in fine gold filigree stands at the lobe with its tail fanned open behind it, and a small jhumka with a pearl fringe hangs from the base of the bird. There is no enamel and no colour — the whole piece is gold.
Peacock earrings are usually meenakari pieces, with blue and green enamel standing in for the bird's plumage. Doing it in plain gold instead forces all the detail into the metalwork: the individual tail feathers have to be cut, the eye of each feather pierced, the crest and beak shaped, and the body textured, because there is no colour to carry the design. The result is quieter but considerably finer, and it photographs very differently — the piece reads as a piece of goldwork rather than as a colourful motif.
The tail fans into a half-circle of separate feather shapes, each one pierced through, which is what keeps a solid-looking bird this light. The neck curves forward and down in the classic posture, and the small jhumka hangs directly beneath the body so the whole thing reads as one continuous form rather than two separate parts.
Hair fully up — filigree this fine is wasted if it is half-covered. Because there is no colour, these go with every saree and kurta you own. They suit silk and cotton equally and are a good choice when the outfit is already busy and you do not want to add another colour.
Festivals, weddings, pujas, daytime functions and family gatherings.
Light for the size. The pierced tail removes most of the metal and the bell is hollow.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush between the pearl drops and inside the bell, where a cloth cannot reach. Hang or lay them flat in a pouch so the fringe is not crushed, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
