A pair of ear pins in gold-tone brass, each one a long straight stem with two fish set along it. There are no stones anywhere on them — the whole design is in the metal.
These are ear pins rather than conventional earrings. The stem passes through an ordinary lobe piercing from the front and the ornament then rides upward along the line of the ear, so the piece sits on the ear rather than hanging from it. Worn that way the two fish appear to swim up towards the rim.
The fish themselves are small, modelled in the round rather than stamped flat, with the scales and tail fins cut in. Because nothing here depends on a stone catching light, the whole effect rests on the shaping — which is why a design like this either looks good or looks like nothing at all.
The fish is one of the oldest auspicious signs in Indian art, an emblem of abundance and of fertility, and it turns up on temple doors and on bridal jewellery alike. Used here at this scale it reads as playful rather than ceremonial, which is most of the appeal.
The body is brass under a gold polish. Brass is the right base for a piece that has to hold a slim stem straight — it is stiff enough not to bend in the hand and soft enough to be worked into shapes this small.
The pair weighs almost nothing. With no stones and no hanging drop, there is very little for the lobe to carry, which is what makes an earring of this length comfortable for a full day.
Wear the hair tucked back so the line of the stem shows — against loose hair the design disappears entirely. They sit well with a plain cotton kurta or a shirt, and they are one of the few Indian earring shapes that does not look overdressed with western clothes.
Because they are slim and quiet, they also work as a second pair worn above a stud in a double piercing.
There is no gold in this and Keyura does not describe it as gold anywhere. It is plated brass, priced accordingly, and the pleasure of it is the modelling of the fish rather than the material.
Treat the plating as the wearing part. Keep it away from water, perfume and hair spray, put the pair on last when you dress, and wipe them with a dry cotton cloth before they go away. Stored dry in a zip pouch with the air pressed out the finish lasts for years; left in a humid bathroom it will not last a season.
