A small enamelled flower sits at the lobe, a curved gold arm sweeps around the ear, and a parrot perches where the arm meets a round disc set with coloured stones inside a close border of pearls. Roughly 2 inches, in five colourways.
Parrots are among the oldest motifs in Indian ornament and carry a specific association — they are the vahana of Kamadeva and a standard emblem of love and message-carrying in miniature painting. They also suit metalwork unusually well, because a parrot is read almost entirely by its curved beak and long tail, and both of those survive being rendered at a few millimetres where a more subtly shaped bird would not.
The curved arm hooks around the outer ear, so the weight sits along the ear rather than hanging from the lobe. That is what lets a piece carry a disc this size without pulling, and it is why ear cuffs have become the usual way to wear heavy traditional motifs comfortably. No second piercing is needed — the stud goes through your existing lobe piercing and the arm does the rest.
Seed pearls ring the disc completely. They frame the coloured stones inside so the disc reads as a deliberate object rather than simply ending, and because the pearls stand proudest of anything on the piece they take the knocks and protect the stone settings within. A beaded metal rim would have done the framing but not the protecting.
Red & White, Multi, Ruby Red, Red & Green and Green. Availability is confirmed before payment.
Hair fully up — a cuff is invisible under loose hair. It suits cotton, silk and handloom, and gold-bordered sarees in particular. Wear as a pair, or one cuff with a plain stud in the other ear.
Festivals, mehendis, weddings, daytime functions and family gatherings.
Comfortable for the size, as the cuff spreads the weight along the ear rim instead of loading the lobe.
Type: Ear cuff. Metal: Brass. Finish: Gold-tone plating. Stones: Monalisa with paachi stones. Size: approximately 2 inches. Available in 5 colourways.
This is brass with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough to wear comfortably. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it meets — perfume, hairspray and sweat all shorten it, while a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably.
Put this on after perfume, hairspray and hand cream, and take it off before washing, swimming or sleeping. Wipe with a dry soft cloth and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and between any pearls, where a cloth cannot reach. Store it in a zip-lock pouch — which is what the supplier themselves advise, and the single most effective thing for a plated piece, because it keeps humid air off the metal. Never use silver polish, dip cleaners or an ultrasonic cleaner.
