The body is a large paisley — the curved teardrop with a hooked tip found throughout Indian textile and jewellery — worked in brushed gold with an oxidised silver border, centred on a single clear kundan stone. A fringe of small gold beads hangs from the lower curve.
Available in Silver — the dual tone gold and silver finish shown.
The paisley is a genuinely large shape here, filling the whole lower half of the earring, and filling it with plain brushed gold rather than stones is a confident choice. It gives the eye a broad, calm surface after the detailed silver work at the top, which is what stops an ornate earring from becoming exhausting to look at.
That plain gold area also makes the single kundan stone at its centre far more effective than a scattering of stones would be. One stone, plenty of space around it.
Brushed matte gold for the paisley, oxidised antique silver for the border and the top section. The two metals meet along a clearly defined line rather than blending, which is what makes dual tone work look intentional.
Small gold beads hang close together around the curve of the paisley, following its shape rather than hanging in a straight line. That is a small detail with a real effect — the fringe becomes part of the silhouette instead of an addition to it.
Post fitting. They have genuine presence, but the panel is thin sheet metal rather than solid, so they remain comfortable across an evening function.
Silk sarees, lehengas and richly worked anarkalis. Because both metals are present you can wear gold or silver bangles alongside. Hair up, necklace short or absent.
The paisley, or buta, has been drawn in India for centuries and travelled to Europe through Kashmiri shawls, which is how a Scottish town ended up giving the shape its English name. In its original context it is thought to represent a cypress tree or a sprouting seed, and it appears on everything from block printed cotton to bridal embroidery. Because the shape is so deeply familiar, an earring built around it reads as traditional even when the treatment is modern, which is exactly what makes a plain brushed gold paisley work alongside intricate silver.
Store them in a zip lock pouch so the fringe does not tangle. Put them on after perfume and hairspray, wipe with a dry soft cloth, and keep them away from water.
