A band of pierced filigree curves along the upper ear and carries a round flower rosette at its midpoint, descending to a small openwork bell at the lobe — a jhumka whose sides are cut through rather than solid.
Every part of this piece is pierced: the cuff band, the rosette and the bell itself. That consistency is what holds the design together, because a solid bell hanging from a filigree cuff would look like two different earrings joined at the lobe. Piercing the bell as well means light passes through the whole length of the piece and it reads as one continuous openwork form from the top of the ear to the bottom.
The cuff grips the ear rim by its own curve and the post passes through the single lobe piercing, so no helix piercing and no separate clip are needed. Ease the cuff on from behind rather than forcing it over the rim, and avoid opening the curve out to make it easier — a cuff that has been widened will not grip again.
The rosette at the midpoint is the only solid-feeling element, which gives the eye a resting point halfway up a piece that is otherwise all pattern. The bell is small relative to the cuff, keeping the weight low and the balance towards the ear rim rather than the lobe.
Hair fully up. These are lighter in feel than a stone-set cuff and suit daytime functions and festivals as readily as evenings. Wear as a pair, or one cuff with a small stud in the other ear.
Festivals, mehendis, daytime functions, weddings and family gatherings.
Light. Openwork removes most of the metal and the cuff shares the weight with the lobe.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush between the pearl drops and inside the bell, where a cloth cannot reach. Hang or lay them flat in a pouch so the fringe is not crushed, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
