A single curved wire follows the outer edge of the ear, with a stone-set flower at the lobe end and two small teardrop stones hanging from the upper curve. The wire itself is the structure; everything else hangs off it.
The design puts ornament at both ends of the curve and nothing in the middle, which is what makes it read as a frame around the ear rather than a decorated band sitting on it. The flower anchors the lower end and gives the eye somewhere to settle; the two small drops at the top catch light and move slightly; the bare wire between simply follows the ear.
The flower at the lobe end is set with a central coloured stone surrounded by petals outlined in gold, sized to sit neatly against the lobe. The curved wire is plain and round in section, shaped to follow a typical outer ear. Two small teardrop stones hang from the upper part of the curve on very short links, so they sit close to the wire rather than dangling.
An ear cuff is held by the shape of the ear rather than by a piercing. The curved band slides over the outer rim and grips gently by tension, and on this design a long pin passes behind to steady it. No piercing is needed at that point, so it suits anyone with a single piercing who wants the look of several, and it can be taken off instantly. Ease it on from the side rather than pushing it straight down, and never bend the band wide open to fit it — that is what loosens an ear cuff permanently.
Hair up, ear exposed, worn on one ear. Keep the other ear bare or wear only a matching small stud. This design is more ornate than a plain cuff, so it suits festivals and traditional dressing particularly well, and the flower keeps it recognisably Indian.
Festivals, weddings, parties and photo shoots.
Light and well distributed, because the weight is spread between the lobe end and the upper curve rather than hanging from one point. Seat it carefully the first time.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and through any fringe. Store them in a pouch rather than loose in a box, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
