A large paisley worked in open filigree sweeps up along the ear, scattered with small flowers, and at the lobe end a granulated medallion anchors it with a cluster of pearls hanging beneath.
Where most ear cuffs are a slim band with a motif at one end, this one fills the whole outer ear with scrollwork. The paisley shape is the reason it works — its natural curve already matches the ear, so the ornament follows the anatomy rather than fighting it. It is the piece to choose if you want the ear cuff itself to be the statement rather than a frame for something else.
The paisley is built from fine twisted wire formed into scrolls and soldered into an open framework, so light passes through it and the weight stays low despite the size. Small flowers with granulated centres are set at intervals across the scrollwork. At the lobe, a round medallion worked in beading anchors the design, with three or four small pearls hanging below it on short links.
An ear cuff is held by the shape of the ear rather than by a piercing. The curved band eases over the outer rim and grips gently by tension. No piercing is needed where it sits, so it suits anyone with a single piercing who wants the look of several, and it comes off instantly. Ease it on from the side rather than pushing it straight down, and never bend the band wide open to fit — that is what loosens an ear cuff permanently.
Hair fully up with the ear completely exposed, worn on one ear with the other bare. Keep the neck clear and skip the maang tikka — a cuff this size already occupies the side of the head. It suits silk, tissue and traditional dressing, and it photographs extremely well in profile.
Festivals, weddings, receptions and photo shoots.
Lighter than it looks, because filigree is mostly open space. The contact spreads across the whole outer ear rather than pressing at one point, which is what makes a piece of this size wearable.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably.
Put this on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around any stone settings. Store it flat in a pouch so the curve keeps its shape, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
