A large pierced filigree fan curves over and behind the ear, a stone-set disc anchors it in the hair above, several strands of pearl chain swag between the two, and a fluted jhumka hangs at the lobe. Available in Green, Red, Grey, Black, Blue, Mint and Yellow.
This is the most architectural form in Indian earrings. Rather than hanging from the lobe, the piece wraps around the whole ear — the fan follows the outer curve, the chains swag across the open space, and the jhumka finishes it below. The ear becomes the frame rather than the hanging point, which is why the style photographs so distinctively in profile.
The fan is pierced openwork in a scrolling pattern, shaped to the curve of the ear so it sits flush rather than standing away. It is anchored by a disc set with a coloured stone that clips into the hair above the ear and carries most of the weight. Between the disc and the fan, strands of fine chain strung with small pearls hang in graduated swags. The jhumka at the lobe is fluted with a pearl fringe.
Green and Red are the traditional bridal choices. Black and Grey read as modern. Mint, Blue and Yellow are the softer options. The filigree, chains and pearls stay the same across all of them.
Hair must be fully up, with the ear completely exposed. Put the anchoring disc into the hair first, then seat the fan along the ear, then settle the jhumka in the lobe. Allow a few minutes the first time. Neck bare, no necklace, no maang tikka.
Weddings, bridal wear, receptions and major festivals.
More comfortable than it looks, because the hair anchor carries most of the weight rather than the piercing. The fan rests against the ear rather than gripping it.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably. Treated sensibly, the colour holds for a long time.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and through any fringe or chain. Store them flat and on their own in a pouch so the chains do not tangle, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
