A coloured stone sits at the top, below it a scrolled filigree crest spreads outward like a small crown, and from its lower edge hang three clusters of pale pearls. Available in Black, Baby Pink, Mint, Blue and Aqua.
Filigree is normally used to fill large areas, because the technique is slow and the effect gets lost if the piece is too small. Compressing it into a crest barely wider than a thumbnail is a harder thing to do well, and the payoff is an earring that looks genuinely elaborate up close while remaining small enough to wear without thinking about it. Most ornate earrings force you to choose between those two things.
The crest is built from fine twisted wire formed into scrolls and soldered into an open framework, so light passes through it and the shape stays airy rather than solid. A single coloured stone caps the top, held in a small bezel. Three pearl clusters hang from the lower edge on short links, each a tight group of three or four pale beads rather than a single drop — which is what gives the bottom of the earring its soft, slightly foamy quality instead of a hard fringe line.
The colour is the single stone at the top and the tone of the pearl clusters. Black is the most versatile. Baby Pink, Mint and Aqua are soft and work well in daylight. Blue is the deepest of the five.
Small enough to wear with loose hair, detailed enough to look dressed up. They suit cotton and silk equally, and they are a good choice for a function where you will be on your feet for hours and do not want heavy earrings. Keep the necklace simple.
Festivals, pujas, daytime functions and family gatherings.
Light. Filigree is mostly open space and the pearl clusters are tiny, so there is very little weight despite the visible detail.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably. Treated sensibly, the colour holds for a long time.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and through any fringe. Store them in a pouch rather than loose in a box, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
