A flower stud, a stone-set fan spreading below it, and from the fan's two outer points a single chain that swags downward in a deep curve, hung along its length with small gold bells. Available in Mint, Blue, Red, Black, Aqua, White, Baby Pink and Green.
Every other Kashmiri design here drops straight down. This one loops: the chain leaves one side of the fan, falls, and returns to the other side, forming a U below the ear. The difference in effect is considerable — a swag reads as decorative and contained where a straight fall reads as length, and because both ends are anchored the chain swings as a single unit rather than two strands moving separately.
The fan is pierced and set with small stones along its spread, widening from a narrow base so it fills the space below the stud. The swag chain is attached at both outer points and cut long enough to hang in a generous curve rather than a tight arc. Small bells hang from it at even intervals along the whole length, so the curve is marked out by points of gold. The finish is warm gold throughout.
Red and Green are the traditional choices. Black and White are the most graphic. Mint, Aqua, Baby Pink and Blue are the soft options. The colour is in the stones set across the fan.
Hair up and secured, neck bare. Because the chain loops rather than falls, these are shorter in effect than the straight-fall Kashmiri designs and therefore easier to wear with a necklace or a high collar if you must. They suit silk and cotton equally.
Weddings, festivals, pujas and daytime functions.
Light and well behaved. Because the swag is anchored at both ends it does not swing loosely or tangle the way free-hanging chains can, which makes this one of the more practical Kashmiri designs.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably. Treated sensibly, the colour holds for a long time.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and through any fringe or chain. Store them flat and on their own in a pouch so the chains do not tangle, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
