A compact disc carrying an enamelled flower, worn on the upper curve of the ear and held by a fine pin passing behind. Available in Baby Pink, Mint, Black, Aqua, Peach, Blue, Red and Green.
Traditional bugadis are stone-set or plain gold. Filling the face with coloured enamel instead makes the piece considerably more casual — it stops reading as bridal jewellery and starts reading as something you could wear on an ordinary day, which is unusual for an upper-ear ornament. With eight colours available it also becomes something to match rather than something to save for occasions.
The flower fills the disc with enamel laid into recesses between raised gold petal outlines, so the colour sits flush and the petals stay defined. A small stone sits at the centre. The disc is slightly convex and the plain gold rim contains the design. Behind, a fine curved pin holds the piece in place against the ear without any piercing.
An ear cuff is held by the shape of the ear rather than by a piercing. The curved band eases over the outer rim and grips gently by tension. No piercing is needed where it sits, so it suits anyone with a single piercing who wants the look of several, and it comes off instantly. Ease it on from the side rather than pushing it straight down, and never bend the band wide open to fit — that is what loosens an ear cuff permanently.
Black is the most versatile and the most modern. Red and Green are the traditional pairings. Baby Pink, Mint, Aqua, Peach and Blue are the softer options and make the piece read as genuinely casual rather than festive.
Hair up with the ear exposed. Wear it alone on the upper ear with a small stud in the lobe, or leave the lobe bare. Because this version is small and coloured rather than ornate, it works with everyday clothing in a way most ear ornaments do not.
Daily wear, festivals, parties and daytime functions.
Light and small. The disc is compact and the pin spreads the pressure, so it can be worn for a long stretch without discomfort.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably.
Put this on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings. Store it flat in a pouch so the curve keeps its shape, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
