These emerald green stone peacock earrings are built around one large faceted green stone, wide and oval, with a gold peacock standing on each side of it as though guarding it.
The top is a cluster of red and green kundan stones in a gold setting, with a small rectangular panel of alternating red and green below it. From there the design widens into the main drop.
The green stone is cut with broad facets that catch light in panels rather than sparkling, and it is held in a plain bezel so nothing distracts from its colour. The two peacocks perch on the bezel's upper edge, their bodies gold and their detail picked out in fine relief, with small stones set into the frame between them. Pearl clusters hang from the lower edge in three groups.
Green and gold is a combination that suits almost every Indian outfit, but it looks particularly good against ivory, gold, maroon and mustard. For a matched look, wear them with a green silk saree; for contrast, choose deep red.
Wear your hair back so the peacocks are visible; loose hair tends to cover the upper half of the design.
The single large stone keeps this lighter than a drop built from many small settings, and the earring hangs in a stable line rather than swinging sideways. The pearl clusters are small and add movement rather than weight, which makes these manageable for a long function.
Large single stones depend on the supply of well-matched pairs: two stones of the same size, colour and clarity have to be found for every pair of earrings. Deep green in this size is one of the first to run short each season, which is why availability changes quickly.
Keep these away from water, perfume and hair spray, and put them on once you are ready. Wipe them with a soft dry cloth after wearing, and store them flat in a pouch so the large stone face is not scratched by other jewellery.
A single large stone also photographs more cleanly than a cluster of small ones, since there is one clear point of colour rather than many reflections, which is worth knowing if the earrings are for a wedding where photographs matter.
