A kundan-set stud sits at the lobe, below it a wide inverted-arch panel worked in silver and gold with peacock heads at the shoulders, and beneath that a crescent filled with openwork and hung with dense clusters of small pearls. Roughly 3 inches, in five colourways.
Most long earrings widen steadily to the bottom. This one is widest across the shoulders of the upper panel and then curves inward to the crescent below, so the silhouette flares and tapers rather than simply growing. That shape is what gives a chandbali its particular outline — the eye reads a moon rather than a triangle, and it is the reason the form has a name of its own.
The pearls hang in bunched groups rather than a single even row. A row outlines the rim and stops; clusters fill the space beneath it, so the bottom of the earring becomes a mass rather than a line, and the whole piece gains perhaps a third again in visual weight. They also move out of step with one another, which is why a cluster-hung earring catches the eye across a room while an evenly fringed one reads as static.
The stones are set flat and fitted to their compartments rather than domed and dropped into collets — the kundan manner. The result is a continuous plane of colour broken only by thin metal lines, instead of a row of separate bright bumps standing off the surface.
Red & White, Turquoise & Red, Blue & White, Multi and Red & Green. Availability is confirmed before payment.
Hair fully up, neck clear, no necklace. This is bridal-weight jewellery and should be the only thing above the collarbone apart from a maang tikka. Heavy silk, lehengas, maroon and ivory.
Weddings, receptions, sangeets and bridal wear.
Substantial — the pearl clusters add real weight at the base. Best kept for an evening rather than a full day.
Type: Chandbali drop earrings. Metal: Brass. Finish: Dual tone, gold and silver plating. Stones: Kundan-set Monalisa with paachi stones. Size: approximately 3 inches. Available in 5 colourways.
Dual-tone means two platings on one piece — a bright silver tone and a warm gold tone, applied to different parts of the same design so each section reads separately. It is harder than a single finish because the two have to be masked off from one another, and it is why these pieces show their detail so clearly: the eye separates the gold elements from the silver ones before it has read a single stone. The base metal underneath is brass, so this is plating rather than solid gold or silver.
Put this on after perfume, hairspray and hand cream, and take it off before washing, swimming or sleeping. Wipe with a dry soft cloth and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and between any pearls, where a cloth cannot reach. Store it in a zip-lock pouch — which is what the supplier themselves advise, and the single most effective thing for a plated piece, because it keeps humid air off the metal. Never use silver polish, dip cleaners or an ultrasonic cleaner.
