These dual tone jhumka earrings read from top to bottom in three materials: an engraved silver stud, a deep red stone in gold, and a ridged silver bell with a pearl fringe.
The stud is a small rectangular panel of silver with a rose engraved on its face, finished with gold leaves at its base. Below it sits the red stone: a smooth teardrop, flat cut, in a gold bezel with a granulated edge and a small gold cap at the top.
The jhumka bell beneath is silver tone, deeply ridged and pierced with a row of leaf-shaped cut-outs around its widest part, so light passes through the metal. A fringe of small pearls hangs from the rim, close together, giving the bell a soft lower edge against all the hard ridging above.
Red and silver is a less common pairing than red and gold, and it suits outfits where a full gold earring would be too warm: greys, blacks, deep blues and whites all work beautifully.
These are a middling length, sitting just below the lobe, so they show well with hair up or down and do not restrict your hairstyle.
Most of the weight sits in the bell, which hangs freely below the lobe and swings rather than pressing against the ear. The stud is small and flat, so the earring hangs straight, and the pierced bell is lighter than a solid one of the same size.
Jhumkas that combine silver bells with gold stone settings need two finishes applied to one piece, which adds a step to production and keeps batches small. This particular combination is also asked for by name, since red and silver is harder to find than red and gold.
Keep the earrings away from water, perfume and hair spray so the two metal tones stay distinct. Wipe them with a soft dry cloth after wearing, and store them upright in a box so the pearl fringe hangs straight and the bell is not dented.
The engraved rose on the stud is easy to miss at arm's length but clearly visible up close, which is the kind of detail that makes a moderately priced earring feel more considered than its price suggests.
