Four elements stacked: a round stone in a beaded frame, a square stone set in a decorated bar, a chandbali crescent edged with pearls and filled with openwork, and finally a long chain ending in a small tassel. Available in Green, Black, Mint, Yellow Amethyst, Aqua, Baby Pink, Yellow and Grey.
Using a round stone and a square one in the same earring is a deliberate contrast and an unusual one — most designs repeat a single cut. The round reads as soft and traditional, the square as sharp and architectural, and stacking them directly on top of each other makes each more noticeable. It also gives the upper half of the earring a rhythm before the crescent takes over.
The round stone sits in a frame of fine gold beading. Below it, the square stone is set into a horizontal bar with small finials at each end. The crescent beneath is openwork with a rosette at its centre and a close row of small pearls around the outer curve. From its lowest point a single fine chain descends well below the crescent, finishing in a small gold tassel — a quiet full stop after a lot of detail.
Yellow Amethyst is a two-tone option pairing a warm and a cool stone. Green is traditional. Black and Grey read modern. Mint, Aqua, Baby Pink and Yellow are the soft choices. The colour applies to both stones.
Hair up, neck bare, no necklace — the tassel chain reaches well down and a pendant would collide with it. These suit silk, tissue and brocade and are formal enough for a wedding.
Weddings, receptions and major festivals.
Moderate. The crescent is openwork and the chain weighs little, but this is a tall earring with four stacked elements, so it is an evening piece rather than an all-day one.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably. Treated sensibly, the colour holds for a long time.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and through any fringe or chain. Store them flat and on their own in a pouch so the chains do not tangle, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
