Two gold rings sit one inside the other, both lined with tiny clear stones around their circumference, with a teardrop Monalisa cabochon at the lobe above and a second teardrop at the base below. Available in Grey, Yellow, Red, Blue, Black, Green, Aqua, Mint and Baby Pink.
Dividing the work between two kinds of stone is what makes this design hold together. The tiny clear stones go all the way round both rings and supply continuous brightness; the two coloured teardrops sit at the top and bottom and supply the colour. Neither element has to do both jobs, so the rings never look crowded and the teardrops never have to compete with sparkle.
The two rings are different diameters and nested off-centre rather than concentrically, which gives the pair their slight lean. Each is set with a continuous line of small stones in individual cups around the outer face. The upper teardrop is fixed at the lobe with its point upward; the lower one hangs below the larger ring with its point downward, so the two mirror each other across the circles.
Monalisa is the trade name used across Indian fashion jewellery for a smooth, slightly translucent stone with a soft inner glow, somewhere between a cat's eye and an opal in appearance. It is cut as a cabochon rather than faceted, so it shows an even field of gentle colour instead of scattering sparkle. That makes it considerably easier to wear in daylight than a faceted stone, and kinder against most skin tones. It is a decorative stone used in costume and fashion jewellery and is not a certified natural gemstone.
The two teardrops carry the colour while the ring stones stay clear. Black and Grey are the most graphic. Red and Green are the deepest. Yellow, Blue, Aqua, Mint and Baby Pink are the softer options.
Hair up or tucked back, neck bare or a thin chain. These are bright enough for an evening and compact enough for daytime, and the circular silhouette suits both modern and traditional clothing. Keep other jewellery simple since the ring stones already supply a lot of light.
Parties, festivals, evenings and daytime functions.
Light for the amount of visible detail. The rings are fine and the stones tiny, so despite covering a reasonable area the earring weighs very little.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings. Store them in a pouch rather than loose in a box, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
