These deep red teardrop stone earrings are built around one large faceted stone, cut so its surface breaks the light into panels rather than reflecting it flat. The colour is a deep wine red, set in a frame that is gold on one side and oxidised silver on the other.
The top is a cross-shaped cluster: four red kundan stones in gold settings around a clear centre, with tiny pearls at the outer points. A short link joins it to the main drop.
The drop's frame is where the dual tone shows most clearly, with gold scrollwork on the upper edges and oxidised silver along the lower curve, and small red stones set into the frame at intervals. Clusters of pearl-like beads hang from both sides and from the point of the teardrop, softening what would otherwise be a hard outline.
Deep red is the colour of Indian bridal wear, so these sit naturally with a red or maroon lehenga, but they are just as striking as the single point of colour against ivory, gold, black or bottle green.
Wear your hair back so the full drop shows, and keep the necklace light; a large single stone reads best without competition.
A single large stone is lighter than a drop built from many small settings, so these are easier to wear than their size suggests. They hang in a straight line and the pearl clusters are small, so the movement is gentle rather than swinging.
Keep these away from water, perfume and hair spray, and put them on last. Wipe them with a soft dry cloth after wearing, and store them flat in a pouch so the large stone face is not scratched by other jewellery.
Large single-stone earrings depend on the supply of well-matched stones, so a run is limited by the stones available rather than the metalwork. Deep red in this size is one of the first colours to go each season.
