These deep red oval stone long earrings are built in two halves: a slim vine of clear kundan leaves at the top, and a single large red stone at the bottom.
The vine is made of small marquise-cut clear stones set in pairs along a narrow gold spine, like leaves on a stem, tapering as it descends. It is deliberately narrow, which makes the earring long without making it wide.
The stone at the base is a broad deep red oval, faceted underneath so the colour deepens towards the centre, held in a gold bezel and ringed by a close-set border of tiny clear crystals. The contrast between the delicate vine and the heavy stone is the whole idea of the design.
The narrow shape suits a high or closed neckline, where a wide chandbali would crowd the collar. Wear these with a red or maroon outfit for a match, or against ivory, gold and black for contrast.
They are long enough to be noticed but slim enough to wear with hair down, which is unusual for an earring of this length.
The vine is light and most of the weight sits in the stone at the bottom, which hangs clear of the shoulder. The earring is slim enough not to tangle in hair, and the straight line means it does not twist as you move.
Long narrow designs are in constant demand for high-necked outfits, which are the standard cut for bridal blouses and anarkalis. Large red stones also have to be matched in pairs, so each batch produces a limited number.
Keep the earrings away from water, perfume and hair spray, which dull the crystals and the gold tone. Wipe them with a soft dry cloth after wearing, and store them flat in a box so the narrow vine is not bent.
A narrow earring also sits well with a dupatta drawn over the head, since there is nothing wide to catch as the fabric moves, which is worth knowing for ceremonies where the head stays covered.
