A fine gold stem curves downward from the lobe, forms an open leaf-shaped loop partway along, and finishes in a round Monalisa stone held inside a plain circular frame. Available in Grey, Yellow, Mint, Blue, Black, Aqua, Red and Green.
The stem, the leaf loop and the frame around the stone are all one continuous piece of wire. That is a harder way to make an earring than assembling parts, and it shows: there are no joints to interrupt the eye, so the whole thing reads as a single gesture rather than a set of components. The leaf is an opening in the line rather than a shape added to it.
The wire is round in section and polished smooth throughout. The leaf loop is formed by the stem doubling back on itself, leaving an elongated opening with a point at each end. The stone sits in a bezel at the bottom, surrounded by a circular frame that the stem resolves into, so the earring ends in a closed shape rather than trailing off. Everything is rigid; nothing swings independently.
Monalisa is the trade name used across Indian fashion jewellery for a smooth, slightly translucent stone with a soft inner glow, somewhere between a cat's eye and an opal in appearance. It is cut as a cabochon rather than faceted, so it shows an even field of gentle colour instead of scattering sparkle. That makes it considerably easier to wear in daylight than a faceted stone, and kinder against most skin tones. It is a decorative stone used in costume and fashion jewellery and is not a certified natural gemstone.
Because the metalwork is so spare, the stone carries the piece. Black and Grey are the most contemporary. Red and Green are the deepest. Mint, Aqua, Blue and Yellow are the lighter options, and pale Monalisa stones show their inner glow most clearly.
Plain, modern clothing — shirts, linen, solid dresses, minimal kurtas. The sculptural line needs a clean background to read against. Hair up. No necklace; the curve already occupies the space beside the neck.
Parties, evenings, office and daily wear.
Light. A single fine wire and one small stone weigh almost nothing, and the curve hangs close to the neck rather than projecting outward.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably. Treated sensibly, the colour holds for a long time.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and into textured areas. Store them in a pouch rather than loose in a box, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
