A single stem curves in a long S, with a spray of leaves at each end and a small cluster of pearls hanging from the lower one. It follows the line of the ear rather than hanging from it.
The other climbers here are straight pins. This one curves, which lets it follow the actual contour of the outer ear rather than cutting across it at an angle. The result sits far more naturally and covers more of the ear, and because the S reverses direction halfway along, the leaf sprays at either end point in opposite directions — giving the piece real movement even when still.
The stem is round in section and tapers slightly towards each end. At the top, three small leaves open outward; at the bottom, a matching spray holds a cluster of three or four small pearls on very short links. The leaves are cut from flat sheet and veined, set at angles so they catch light separately. The curve is pre-formed to a typical outer-ear shape.
The lower end passes through the lobe piercing and the curve rises behind and along the ear, held by its own shape. No second piercing and no clip is needed. Ease it in gently and let the curve settle against the ear rather than forcing it into position, and avoid opening the curve out to fit — that is what loosens a climber permanently.
Hair fully up with the ear exposed, worn as a pair or on one ear only. The botanical form suits both modern and traditional dressing, and the piece photographs particularly well in profile because the S-curve is legible from the side.
Parties, festivals, weddings and photo shoots.
Light, and the weight spreads along the curve rather than pulling on the lobe, which makes this more comfortable than a drop of similar size.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush over any textured surfaces. Store them flat in a pouch so the shape is kept, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
Type: Curved ear climber. Metal: Brass. Finish: Gold-tone plating. Work: S-curved stem with veined leaf sprays at both ends and a pearl cluster. Closure: Pin through lobe, held by the curve. Available in a single gold colourway.
