Two crescent moons, each a thin curve tapering to points at both ends, sit one above the other on a fine climbing pin. There are no stones.
Very few motifs stay recognisable at a few millimetres. The crescent does, because its outline is defined by two curves rather than by internal detail — nothing is lost when it gets small. That is why moons turn up so often in small jewellery and why they work better here than a more intricate subject would.
Each crescent is cut with a thin waist and tapering tips, giving it a pronounced curve rather than a fat half-moon shape. Both are set with their open sides facing the same way along the pin, so they echo each other as the eye travels up the ear. The surface is lightly textured rather than mirror-polished, which stops the thin form from disappearing into glare. The pin is fine, straight and rounded at the tip.
The pin passes through your existing lobe piercing and then rises at an angle along the ear, so a single piercing produces the look of a climber. There is no cuff, no clip and no second fitting. Slide it through gently and let the upper end rest against the ear — the angle it settles at is what holds it. Nothing hangs below the lobe, so it cannot swing, tangle in hair or catch on a collar.
Hair up or tucked back. The crescent carries associations in both Indian and Islamic decorative traditions and also reads as entirely contemporary, so these are unusually adaptable. They suit everyday clothing of any kind. Wear as a pair.
Daily wear, office, college, festivals and casual outings.
Very light. The tapering tips are rounded rather than needle-sharp, and nothing hangs below the lobe.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush over any textured surfaces. Store them flat in a pouch so the shape is kept, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
