A single length of gold wire coils inward from the outer edge to the centre, forming a broad flat disc. There is nothing else — no stone, no texture, no applied ornament. The spiral is the entire earring.
The spiral is probably the oldest decorative form humans have used, appearing in metalwork, pottery and rock carving across every continent long before those cultures ever met. It persists because it does something nothing else does: it pulls the eye inward and holds it. Executed as a flat disc of wound wire, with visible gaps between the turns, it reads as both ancient and completely modern.
The turns of the spiral are slightly separated rather than packed tight, which is the critical decision — the gaps let shadow fall between them so the disc has depth, whereas a solid spiral would read as a flat textured plate. The wire is polished so each turn carries its own bright line, producing a set of concentric highlights. The disc sits flat against the ear on a centred post, so despite its diameter it does not tip forward.
Nothing is set into this design, which means it goes with every outfit colour and there is nothing that can come loose. For a statement earring worn regularly, that is a real practical benefit.
Plain clothing, solid colours. These are graphic and want a clean background — a linen shirt, a plain dress, a solid kurta. Against embroidery or print the spiral is lost. They work with hair up or down since they sit flat and broad rather than long.
Parties, evenings, office and daily wear.
Light for the size, because the disc is wound wire rather than solid sheet. The flat back and centred post keep it stable on the lobe.
This piece is brass finished with a gold-tone plating rather than solid gold, which is what keeps the price where it is and the weight low enough for comfortable wear. Plating is a surface rather than a bulk property, so how long it lasts depends almost entirely on what it is exposed to. Perfume, hairspray, sweat, soap and chlorinated water all shorten its life; a dry cloth after wearing and a closed pouch between wearings extend it considerably. Treated sensibly, the colour holds for a long time.
Put these on after perfume, hairspray and foundation. Wipe with a dry soft cloth after wearing and use a dry soft brush around the stone settings and into any textured areas. Store them in a pouch rather than loose in a box, and never use toothpaste, bleach or an ultrasonic cleaner.
